Academics
In company D-1 nothing is more serious then academics. We know that our cadets are at Texas A&M University to set the cornerstone that will lead to a successful future. Therefore, there is a strong plan implemented to effectively assure this outcome.
As in any other institution every single student/cadet is strongly advised to attend every class. We also support the attendance of tutoring sessions, supplemental instructions, and many other programs that are there to help any student to achieve academic success. In addition the Corp of Cadets wants our cadets to excel above any other student; this is why we implement the program known as Call to Quarters.
Call to Quarters is a time set up after all classes are finished. All freshmen and sophomores sit from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm for mandatory study time Sunday through Thursday; with the exception of Wednesday which requires for freshmen and sophomores to take care of their academics from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm. During this time they are allowed to do whatever they believe will help their academic status. They can attend on campus study groups, on/off campus tutoring, supplemental instructions, and/or simply go to the university library.
As officially stated “the Corp of Cadets recognizes and rewards cadets with a cumulative GPR of at least 3.4 who foster new ideas of academic achievement, leadership and character who promote scholastic excellence through academic related projects including tutor assistance and operation of a study lounge for all cadets whom need a hand on their scholastics” (http://www.aggiecorps.org/the-corps-experience/special-units.html).
These are only some of the many programs that the Corps of Cadets can provide to every single cadet to excel as a college student. However, in addition to these programs Spider D, because we recognize the importance of personal discipline in regards of academics, requires its freshmen to sit 10 hours or more of what we call Personal Call to Quarters (PCQ). These are hours that must be done on the student’s own time throughout the day, between classes or other convenient times. Spider D has seen that as a new student in as big a university as Texas A&M is, it is important to take advantage of every second for academics. As an incoming student you might think these are too many or unnecessary hours for studying; but, as you start your college life you will come to know that this is the required effort that is needed to succeed in college. It is a lot different than what you might have been used to in high school.
We have the privelege to work with an academic advisor who meets weekly with freshman cadets from D-1 to advise them in academics, how to use the university resources, and help them plan a balanced college career. Our Academic advisor has worked with Spider D for 2 years. She aids any member of each class year of the outfit in any academic issue.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, Spider D was ranked 8th in the Corps of Cadets in overall grades. We are quite proud of that change from the previous year where we were ranked near the bottom. The changes made to our study habits as an outfit have obviously proved successful. Along with overall success, we also have the two highest ranking technical freshmen during the fall semester. It is important to notice that Spider D has a diversity of majors. In the past year D-1 has students who have graduated with majors of Animal Science, Biochemistry Science, Agricultural Leadership and Development, Petroleum Engineering, and Business Administration. Currently, there are students in good academic standing in every different College at A&M.
If you decide to join the family of Spider D, you can be certain that our outfit will do all it can to ensure that your college career will be filled with success.
